When plywood actually needs replacing
The cost to replace roof plywood and shingles splits into two numbers: a reshingle you can price firm, and decking you can only price per sheet. Shingles come off; plywood mostly stays. Decking gets replaced when it's soft (rot from a slow leak), delaminated (plies separating, feels spongy underfoot), or too thin to hold nails. Some mid-century roofs carry 3/8" sheets that modern code and shingle warranties both frown on. Nobody can count your bad sheets from the ground: a complete quote prices the reshingle firm and the decking per sheet, found as the old roof comes off.
The per-sheet math, worked
A 1,700 sq ft roof is about 54 sheets of plywood. Say tear-off finds 4 soft ones around an old chimney leak: 4 × $95 is $380 on top of the reshingle. Annoying, not devastating. The number to fear is a bid that says 'decking as needed' with no per-sheet price attached, because that blank is where budgets go to die. Ours is printed here: $95. Reading a bid against this page
Three checks. The per-sheet decking price is in writing. Ice-and-water shield is in scope, not an add-on discovered later. And the shingle spec names the product, because 'architectural shingles' spans a $40-per-bundle spread. The cost to replace roof plywood and shingles is only comparable when all three pass. Otherwise the low bid is just the least-specified one, whoever you end up hiring.

Can I just reshingle over the old layer?
NY allows 2 layers, but overlays hide the decking we'd want to inspect, add weight, and shorten the new shingles' life. We quote both when an overlay is legal on your roof; the overlay is cheaper today and costs more at the next tear-off. The inspection you skip with an overlay is exactly the decking check this page is about. The per-sheet line only exists when the old roof comes off.
How long does a replacement take?
1–2 days on most houses once material lands. Decking discoveries don't add days, because sheets go in as the tear-off moves across the roof. Permits add lead time that varies by town. Each service-area page says who issues yours and how long they take.
